Now these are the generations of Perez: Perez fathered Hezron, Hezron fathered Ram, Ram fathered Amminadab, Amminadab fathered Nahshon, Nahshon fathered Salmon, Salmon fathered Boaz, Boaz fathered Obed, Obed fathered Jesse, and Jesse fathered David. (Ruth 4:18-22 ESV)
This is an interesting ending to the book of Ruth. In verses 13-17 we are given a summary of Naomi's life. Even in her suffering and loss, she gains a redeemer who will help her in her old age as well as a daughter in law who is better than seven sons! But there is more to the story that Naomi cannot see. From the line of Boaz comes Jesse, the father of David, and then expands upon this in verses 18-22. We know that the line of David gives us the Messianic King, Jesus. The seed of this coming King is found in the life of Naomi. From the life of this insignificant woman, God is unknowingly working out his kingdom purposes. Her story has been caught up in the larger story of God's kingdom purposes. She never saw this nor knew how God would redeem her suffering, using it as a vehicle in bringing about his eternal kingdom! Here is the lesson for us. We do not always know or may never see what kingdom purpose God is doing in and through our seemingly senseless troubles, insignificant acts of faith, or ministry to others.
