My people inquire of a piece of wood,and their walking staff gives them oracles. For a spirit of whoredom has led them astray, and they have left their God to play the whore. Hos. 4:12Hosea often portrays Israels' consistent unfaithfulness to the true God metaphorically as"prostitution." A prostitute is, after all, about as far away from marriage fidelity as is possible to imagine. . . In the prophetic metaphor of marriage relationships, Israel should be Yahweh's faithful wife. Instead, she has deserted him and needs again to be betrothed to him after an imposed period of confinement, exile.
